2005.5 Jetta TDI 5 speed BRM

Post by Mikewire »

Another project :) Picked this up the same day as Wade's VR6 B4 project, and please be sure to read through his thread as well: viewtopic.php?f=79&t=3812

I recently picked up a cheap 2005.5 Jetta w/ Package II, 5 speed, 198K miles. It came to me as a crank, no start condition. VCDS revealed it was a bad throttle body, and that's all I could really find from a scan and inspection.

Body looks good in the pictures, and it's not horrible. But it has some hail damage, re/over spray, and a bit of body damage on the front right side. Still perfectly drive-able!

I dug into it a little, cleaned it up, ordered a new TB and waited for it to come in.

New TB showed up last Friday and I swapped it out, it still would crank, but not start.

Started to go over over fuel issues, pumps, pressure, etc. but it puked oil into the intake...ah dang...so I decided to pull the intake and look at the turbo...and it's roached.

So, I'm looking at a new turbo for this BRM, and need some suggestions, so if you have any throw 'em out

Here's a few pictures from the pickup and cleanup:

Diagnosis, bad TB. Stripped gears and a broken plastic gearset:

I'd check compression first before spending any more money and time on that tdi. There's a good chance it bent some rods from eating all that oil.

Awesome job cleaning that thing! Looks new! What did you use on the engine bay?

Who knew VW sourced their turbos from the KKK?

Anyways the car looks awesome! Hopefully you got a good deal.

I'll do a compression test, thanks for the info on that as well. I *think* rods are OK, because I didn't turn it over after I felt it begin to lock up with oil, and I pulled the glow plugs right after. I turned it over by hand and #2 had a bunch of oil, the rest were clear.

Now, as far as what the PO did, who knows. I do know it wasn't much.

On the engine bay I use simple green, hot water pressure wash, and then I spray it with a rubber/plastic conditioner. I used to use tire shine, then used a Meguires Pro M40, but recently switched to a water based Meguiars D140 Hyper-Dressing.

Quick update on this - redneck compression test sounded decent, so I ended up picking up a new turbo from Europa Parts.

Yeah it's a risk, but I figured I'd give it a shot, and bolted the turbo up...fired right up. Sounds good, has good power, and I may have gotten lucky on this one. It cleaned up well and should be decent to drive around.

I did end up picking up a diesel compression tester, so I'll still run a quick test later.
