You make good pictures! Hate to see em get left behind on page 24Mikewire wrote: ↑Mar Thu 25, 2021 8:53 am Some more updates.
I needed to replace the old busted spare tire. While it was out I had the tire removed and I gave it a good 3 coats of silver paint:
Here's the old setup, from a while ago before other updates...
A shot of the new painted wheel:
Open spot for the spare, I need to go back in and do some additional detailing and cleanup in that area:
Wheel back from the tire shop, installed a decent Falken tire - because it's a spare I didn't spend a ton on it, but it will get me out of a jam if I need it:
Looks comfy tucked into the spare area:
Replaced F&R shocks. The old ones were Boge OEM and had zero rebound, and the rear drivers was completely frozen, and wouldn't budge at all. Much better ride on these new KYB's!
Started working on a full width Westy style rock n' roll bed. I picked up a set of Westy style hinges from NLAVW and then got 2 sheets of 3/4" Birch plywood. Found some basic plans on the Samba and cut them down to size. Picked up some hardware from Lowe's and bolted it up. Used some rivnuts on the back hatch to secure the rear and a couple of lag bolts through the base of the bed to secure in the front. This is a mock up, I have more to do to make it fit and function properly:
Here it is laid flat. Plan is to get a 4" foam cushion and sew some covers. Still working on that part - need to find a good fabric that will work for the cushions:
That's it for now, more updates will be coming soon!

OH hey just wanted to throw this out there and expand on the access hole for the fuel sender. I included it in one of my last updates but kind of glossed over it, even made a video about it:

Thanks Trevor! Here's some more dial-up assassin pictures and updates.
I like this thread for the long format updates, follow @countdowngarage on Instagram and Facebook for short updates.
Reconditioned 205S SVDA distributor, mine was missing the fiber washer and I'll go ahead and send it in for reconditioning and save it as a spare.

This one...well we wanted to head to another show, but only made it about 1/3 of the way before the Bus just would not run. Turns out the fuel filter was plugged up with rust and junk. Changed it out with a new one and all is good now.

This is a prototype resistor cable strain relief retainer 3D printed from ABS. I took some time to design it in CAD and worked on many revisions until I got a version that I liked. Running it now and testing it out.

Oh, and I installed a brand new double relay because it was in my parts stash, and the original one was starting to get a bit wonky.

Old/new brake booster, OEM Brazilian - had to redrill the base plate, but it works darn fine. Mine was OEM and totally not working at all...brakes stop on a dime with 8 cents change now!

New ball joints going in...

New ball joints pressed in the torsion arms.

Torsion arms back in with new ball joints, seals and rebuilt/reconditioned hubs filled with new grease and hub seals

New steering joint (aka Guibo...shout out to WES!!!)

After install.

New front turn lenses from West Coast Metric.

Extracted the old fluid from the steering box and put in new Delo 90W gear oil.

Extreme closeup of the CB Performance shift coupler and my fancy dancy safety wire job. Meh...it's OK...I will try a different technique next time but this works for now

New Febi drag link.

Before picture...rebuilt both front calipers with new piston seals and dust boots. New pins and pad hardware retainers. Cleaned up nice and the pistons move smooth now.

All the rest are pictures of a calm and hot Sunday evening cruise on the far West side of San Antonio, Texas. Feeling pretty good about the reliability and drive quality with all new steering linkages, suspension and all the rest of the work above.

Here's a cool little plug-in I installed so you can post from multiple social media sites, including Instagram and FB. Make a new post and in the formatting bar up top, find the little icon that looks like a computer monitor (it's called "media embed"), and simply copy/paste your link inbetween the [media] tags:
