Carputer

Post by Mill3niumThr33 »

I have decided to build a carputer! I have an old gateway p3 system that I am trying to get to run linux to no avail so i ordered a new system last night  . New system is a PC Chips MiniATX with socket 754/ onboard sound, gfx, lan, etc. Proc is a AMD Sempron 64 2800 . Ram is one stick of Corsair 3200 512mb. I have a spare 120gb segate HDD and 300 watt psu I am going to throw on the system. I will be picking up a wireless card, graphics card, and soundcard later. Still up in the air on what to use for a screen and powersupply integration. My roomate works at premier fx so i am trying to get a deal on a cheap touchscreen or even regular screen. I will update this thread with photos as soon as i get my camera back.

Components Purchased - Motherboard, Processor, Ram , HDD - Had already, PSU - Had already
Total spent thus far - 135

Awesome - I'm using my spare laptop as and just need to pickup a touchscreen. Any idea on what you are going to run?

Ehhh no idea. I am going to use Ubuntu linux and look for some cool players in that. I have never messed around with linux so it should be fun. I dont know whether i want to get a touchscreen or not. It would be awesome but i dont think i can afford it and I am trying to make this for cheap. If you see any good deals let me know!

A 7" touchscreen is about $200 and connects via USB. Check out http://www.mp3car.com for some tips and I think there is an MKIV install somewhere in the examples. Ubuntu should load up and be really cool - as I understand its really easy use and is a lot like Windows, but open source so it's free. I use the command line on my Linux servers, but all they do is serve webpages...

Lol - all depends on the price...on eBay they are about $200 shipped and the quality is supposed to be pretty decent. But let me know cause I want to do it soon.

What kind ofo screen are you looking for? Touch screens for input, or just something to use as a monitor for the system?

I would like the touchscreen so i dont have to have the mouse out all the time to change music and stuff. But if I could get a really good deal [less than 150] on a plain lcd with vga I would go for it. Why you know someplace?

I own a stereo shop. But if you are looking for something around $150, I suggest "drum roll", eBay!

My roomate just brought back some catalogs that i found a screen for 98.24 [7 inch vga non touch]. He also showed me a site that has stuff real cheap. The amp he bought at cost is 20 bucks cheaper on this site! www.ikesound.com
