Engine gremlins are those little bastards the run aroudn you engine bay causeing havoc, and then fixing it for no apparnt reason except to piss you off.
You might see if there is a coilpack recall for your VIN. I know VW has one on the 1.8Ts, but that was solved in 2001. They should have gone to the beetter CP for you car in 02. BUt check your build date, if it was produced in mid/late 01 you may have some bad ones in there....

It's extremely common on the 1.8 for those to crack and fail. The dealer fix is to replace, if the dealer will warranty, but that depends on many factors and only you can work with the dealer on that. The other fix is to cover the entire coilpack with JB weld, which will stop the arcing. CP's are pretty cheap, but the dealer will of course charge labor and markup on parts, so get your checkbook.
Can you fix it? Sure, I think so, but you need Vag-Com, and a mechanical mind mixed with a dash of creativity.

Well $143 later I changed the CP's and the car runs fine now, will the CEL light go away anytime soon or do I need the vag-com still? It really went from running like shit to running normally...aka less like shit lol.

Did you change all of them? You may not have needed to...but whatever. Yeah, you'll need a Vag to clear the code, however, if given enough time, it might clear automatically, but I wouldn't count on it.Doughboy wrote:Well $143 later I changed the CP's and the car runs fine now, will the CEL light go away anytime soon or do I need the vag-com still? Yeah I went ahead and changed all of them, it was the #3 one that was fried I believe. Just gotta wait till my car get out of the auto body shop & valvefloat gets back into town so I can clear those codes.JayRyan wrote: Did you change all of them?
