DIY short shift, maybe

Post by ValveFloat »

I am posting this here instead of the shoutbox, but VWJET00 asked:
see i duno what you mean about drilling a hole in your stock part what you talking about?
Disclaimer, I have not tried this, mostly because I got an HPA piece as a gift.

I don't know if all Mk4 shifter things look like that, but in principle they work the same. The splined part goes on the transmission, and the front to back cable connects to that pin. The closer the pin is to the pivot, the shorter the throw at the shift lever will be. So one could drill a hole closer to the pivot, and move the pin to that hole. Whala, short shifter for cheap.

A lot of people do this with the S4 shifter, but our shifter is super simple.

Anyone remember that the MKI TT part and the MKIV GTI/Jetta matched up for 5 speeds? $40 for a 30% reduction front to back. I wish that someone knew if the MKII TT part and the MKV made any difference or if it works at all. There aren't hardly any options for the MKV 6MT since the DSG craze....B&M shifter and a diesel geek kit - both like $200.

I always thought about making my own hole :D on my MKIV but never had the guts to do it. I wonder if there is enough metal on the MKV....
2007 Black Magic Pearl MKV GTI, 6MT, Revo Stage 1, Eibach Prokit sprints, and a lot of blackness.

Still selling Revo SPS3 unit for 1.8T/2.7T...any takers? PM me for details! I need money for stage 2!

I have this - one thing to watch for is the type of connector on the shifter. From 1995.5 -> 2002 it was a ball style that pops off, and from 2002+ it is a pin style with a c-clip.

I picked my ball type from parts4vws.com - they are harder to find.

Yup, a friend of mine had one too. I just wish there was a similar Audi -> VW swap between the new TT and the MKV GTI/Golf/Rabbit/GLI. Here's to wishing
