Side mounted exhaust

Post by bigmontana »

I really like the way the side mounted exhaust looks on the Jettas. I was wondering if anyone has installed side exhaust on their cars or know anyone who has. I really want to do it but I don't want to remove my TT setup, is their a way I can keep my system but add a pipe that comes out the side with a VW exhaust tip?
Or should I ask an exhaust shop, I'm not sure if they would know around here.

I like the look of it and just wonder if anyone knows anything about it.

I'm sure an exhaust shop could tell you how do-able it is. Side-dumps look sick in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check with one, I love the look. I'll just need to cover the gap in the rear bumper where the exhaust comes out.

I had a ghetto one rigged up for quit a while. Came off of the cat and followed the ~75 degree tunnel and exited in front of the rear left wheel. I messed around with it a lot. Used different sized pipings, mufflers, no mufflers, and ended up with coming straight off the cat...not my choice but a ice chunk at 80 mph decided for me.

IMO sounds great from outside and flyby's. Riding in it is a different story. The droning is unbearable at times and it used to get hung up on the ground when exiting parking lots and during spirited driving. If you got a decent muffler and sound proofed that area better it wouldn't be terrible. I won't attempt it again tho.

I just remembered this as I read the post above.
Some of the side exit systems you see on Mustangs and the like actually have mufflers in their normal location at the rear, but instead of continuing out the rear the tail pipes double back and exit in front of the rear tire.
I suppose this would be possible with a VW, if one wanted to make the effort.

I actually built a side exit for my buddy's rabbit. It was not pretty. It gets caught on stuff, and ther really isn't any proper way to attach them. The under side just isn't layed out for it. Neat idea, just doesn't work well on a low unibody car.

My buddy Jake made one for his MK1 Jetta, and, while it sounded neat, and looked awsome, it did not last. I think that may be partially due to the installer (him), but also that there was no way to hang it very well. I think he even went so far as to weld up some hangers near the wheel, but that still didn't help the fact that the exhaust was now not in the tunnel, and hit on everything, and I think it may have fallen off at one point. I know all he had was a cherry bomb up at the cat, and then just pipe. Try driving that from Missoula to Seattle!

Thank you, I'm seeing now why more people don't have them. Maybe not such a good idea.
