What oil and filters do you run?

I was lied to then, I was told you were not supposed to put synthetic in the older VW motors. So on my GLI with the 2.0 16v, what synthetic should I run it has 142,000 and change and what wheight.

You shouldn't as it can cause it to start to leak like a siv.

So I should stick with my mobil 5w30/10w30 rotation, because up until now it does not use or burn any oil at all it has it's little minor leaks here and there but nothing to get me excited. Thanks

Isn't that kind of thin? I thought you needed like 20w50 in those engines... I dunno... But stick with conventional oil. Also I'm not a fan of mobil1.

Who do you like, it is not Mobil one it is the Conventional version. Who makes 20w50 and should I switch, I just do what mechanics tell me but I want to hear what you guys recommend too. I never knew they made a 20w50 in conventional, I thought that was a synthetic wheight.

I dunno, look in the manual or ask someone else... I always thought you run a heavier weight in the 8 valves.

Its a 16 V so I'll keep what I have it seems to be fine and I don't have any leaks. But I'll ask around.

They do make 20w50 in conventional, but back to your question. I don't have a 16V, so look up oil in the manual index and see what it says. You should be fine running the weight they recommend for colder climates. As far as switching to synthetic, there are different schools of thoughts to it, but if it aint broken, don't fix it. It's not using oil, so it's clearly working. I'd look into a higher milage synthetic/conventional blend.

I think you'd be ok running syn. The reason it may leak is because syn has extra detergents and friction modifiers that clean the crap out from dino (conventional) oil, which may, or may not cause leaks or seepage at gaskets. Use a European weight like 0W-40 or 5W-40. 16 valvers are pretty stout motors so you should be OK running a heavier weight, but I would go with something with a wider temp range like the 0W-40. It's not cheap BTW...but it's good.
