Re: New to me a4..
Bummer! I had always thought that VAG and Audi specific manual transmissions were actually pretty durable. How many miles on it?

Well, my adventures over....
I remember seeing a service record for something clutch/transmission related when i looked at the car the first time...I havent seen it since...so according to the audi tech, the tranny that was in the car wasnt even the right one...obviously it worked, but he said it was kind of a shoddy install...Bolts missing and crap. Best part...there was no pilot bushing installed. So im thinking with the tranny walking like it was, i may have just screwed up the tailshaft. The gears all seem okay..
So the story goes, broke down on a saturday, stayed in spokane overnight, had some friends come from seattle to pick me up, and spent a week there just hanging out while audi replaced the transmission, and a wheel bearing. Got a ride back on the next saturday, and drove home.
Total cost was like 2200....boo
But, it was an adventure so i suppose it was worth it...
But ive got a 6 month warranty on the tranny, and at least i know its all put back together correctly now.

Re: New to me a4..
you should go with a b5 s4 tranny....even the guys making 600+whp only upgrade the clutch, unless your wanting to do a bunch of clutch drops....then 034 has a build kit

Re: New to me a4..
This car just keeps falling apart, lol....A few weeks ago when it snowed a ton, i was on the way into town at like 5 AM and i slid into the ditch. Oops, but Quattro got me out just fine. Im thinking i whacked the exhaust on something though, because it started making this angry buzzing/vibrating sound whenever it got up to temp. I didnt think it sounded like an exhaust leak, but..... So last thursday, again, when it snowed a ton/didnt get plowed i was on my way home and i either slayed one of the massive chunks of frozen slush, or just hit a bump big enough to cause the cat to separate from the flange on the turbine outlet. Damn....
Makes a pretty cool turbo spooling sound, but it runs super rich from the O2 sensors not reading anything so i havent been driving it. On the plus side, with the cat disconnected, i reached inside and realized that the wastegate doors kinda just flapping around so i may have been driving around on super low boost. Maybe fixing that will get rid of the annoying rattling that i get at idle, too.
The hoods painted, and im going to try to fix the headlights here in the AM, so ill post up some update pictures this weekend.

Re: New to me a4..
Had an exciting weekend...I decided to just pull the whole turbo/cat/downpipe out as i had the time and the right equipment to do it. When i pulled the turbo off i saw that the wastegate door had come off of the arm. It was still there, but was kinda just sitting in between the arm and the port with nothing holding it. I actually got pretty excited, because had i been making the correct amount of boost, the arm would have moved and the piece wouldve ended up in the cat.
I added some missing chunks to the door and welded it back onto the arm, making sure it actually sealed this time. I cleaned up the cat/flange and welded them back together, and then added some fresh hardware on the downpipe end.
That was my weekend, so i didnt get the hood installed.
