A few notes on the painting process for those interested. I did the $50 paint job post as a guideline.

I used flat black rustoleum enamel, and the 4" professional foam rollers. First I used a scotchbrite pad to rough the surface, then applied 2 coats of black and sanded with 320 to remove any large imperfections. Coat 3 was a little thin and had some crackling. If it's too thick you get excessive orange peal and too thin it'll crackle and run. Coat 4 went on and then I sanded with 320 again. Did Coat 5&6 and then went over it twice with 320 to remove any orange peal. Then I went over it twice more with 600, and that's it.
A few things I learned from the process. As with any paint job it's all about prep, there is no shortcut to this period. Use a slow roller and light pressure, let it do the work. Intermediate sanding just needs to remove large imperfections, a little peal is fine the next coat will cover it up. Lots of coats are your friend you'll need some thickness if you want to get the final product nice and smooth. I wouldn't recomend doing a partial paint job to a car with a paint less than 10 yrs old, and it won't be a show car. But it can look good, and it doesn't look like you used a roller. I'd do it again, but for now, I've had enough sanding.
