My new (to me) 15" Avus

Post by DynoJetta »

Well I just picked up these wheels off of a guy on the vortex. He was even nice enough to include some high quality road grime and brake dust! :\ Needless to say my whole experience with him was lacking. But they are in better shape than my current wheels (I curbed two of them pretty good).

I would like to blast and repaint them, so my question to anyone/everyone is what's the best way to go about it? If I could get someone to blast them, I could probably paint them myself.

Also, color suggestions? I'm thinking either gun metal gray, or maybe match them to my car's color.

Any and all input is appreciated.

Since your car is dark, I think I would shy away from a dark color. I never liked the look of black wheels on my .:R.
If you have them sand blasted they will get really rough and may require a lot of sanding, so look for soda blasting or some non-sand media blasting.

How about white?

I would suggest powdercoat - it will hold up the best. And you won't need to prep or blast because they will do it for you. $50 a wheel seems to be the going rate and there is a place in Bozo that does good work - check with kompressorgolf (Brandon) because he has a ton of stuff PC'd on his BMP project Golf, and I'm not sure who did the work, but it's quality.

If you want to finish them yourself make sure you have them blasted with walnut media or soda blasted, that will make it easiest.
Sandblasting them is fine but you have to make sure you have someone who knows what they're doing.
Luckily there's Blasting Technologies over in 4 Corners!

I have only heard good things about Marathon Powdercoating from Matt and Brandon.
But from other people, not good things.
Marathon is cheaper than Powder Coating of Montana but I've heard it's for a reason.

Go with these guys instead!

They're really, really good!
They're right over by DynoJet now too!

Good luck man.

I used PC of MT (in Missoula0 a couple of years ago, and the did a really good job. $50/wheel, and that was prep and finish, and they even did two colors. I had been doing a bunch of work with them on a car I was building at work, so that may have been why they threw in the second color. Or maybe it was my pretty eyes? :tear:

Come on guys, keep it clean!
Back on topic, Checkers, have you ever used Blasting Technologies in 4 corners? Seems like according to their website they do mostly wood restoration. I currently live in 4 corners, so it would be pretty easy to drop them by. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see what they'd want to soda blast them. I'll let you all know what they say.
