bmw 2002 recaro seat recover

Hi all, I started an indoor project because it is cold and I'm being a sissy about it. There are actually 3 (that I know of) problems with the driver's seat in my 2002.


So the most obvious issue is the fact that the fabric is falling apart. (and driver and pass. don't match)

It also has that 'recaro sag' of totaly shot webbing and rocks back because the frame bracket in the car is broken off.



Time to tear apart a seat.








Next I busted out the seam ripper and started taking apart the panels that will make my pattern. The driver's left bolster is going to have to be made using a flip of the right bolster and its a good thing that I didn't wait too much longer because the fabric is getting pretty thin over there as well.



Next: find some new material and bust out the old sewing machine. Leif

I took a trip out to Capitol Custom Upholstry (sp?) and for $20 got some new threads for my seat, and they even loaned me a pair of hog ring pliers.

This is a great learining experience for me. If you ever try this I would recommend making some alignment marks on every pair of panels to make putting them back together easier. The factory cut these little crescents for this purpose (I assume) but more would be better.

Also, even though my machine looks like a p.os. it, well, it really is actually. If this is something that I end up doing again I will for sure want an industrial machine. I learned to sew on a flight equiptment machine that could stitch through 8 layers of mil-spec web easy, POWER like a twin turbo V8. My machine is more like a high mileage geo metro, with a fouled plug.









I'm mot replacing all of the panels, just the ones that are damaged or really worn, its easy to see why the shops charge so much to do these kind of seats. Leif.

Done. I matched the lower bolsters and I made a whole bunch of alignment marks; it made pinning and sewing MUCH easier. The bottom turned out really well while the top is much better, it is still a long way from perfect. Still, it is much nicer than before.

I ended up adding even more elastic to the bottom because it didn't feel firm enough at this point.

Found a piece of .032 4130 plate and made a little bracket. Squirted some wire and everything looks good.
