Transmission belhousing swap? 5mtvr6-6mt1.8t

Ok, looking for some real knowledge:

Can I swap bellhousings/internals to use a 6mt from a 1.8t in my vr6 5speed. Both are mk4 era (think they call the tt's 1st gen or something)? I have heard that this is possible, but think that my sources may have been speculating rather than basing this on any real experience.
