I've put a little over 1000mi on the car with no reverse and so far it has not been much of a problem. Reverse and sluggish cold shifting are the only major issues with the car. I am fairly sure its bad solenoids from doing a little googlin. These can be accessed via the cover on the front facing side of the gearbox with or without removing the front clip. Looks like its gonna be about $500 for parts and fluid if you provide the labor. As the car sits, I would drive it anywhere. Previous owner bought it with out reverse and put a ton of highway miles on it. He traded it on a truck when a CV started to fail (replaced). This can be a great car for someone with time and motivation to fix it or do a 5 speed swap. MK4 donors are everywhere these days.
Heres a few good links for someone that might provide a loving home for this car:

More bad:
-Needs PCV kit. Its rigged for now. $95 from ECS -http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Pcv_Kit/ES1884319/
-Busted Grill
-Typical paint damage from rocks, wear on rear bumper from cargo and a DIY repair on rear arch.
-Sticky hatch latch
-201,000mi
-Detailer slimed the entire car, the whole damn car is greazy
-Fogged headlights - $80 or so for the glass lens kit if you don't want to keep polishing
-Monsoon replaced with Sony MP3/USB, sounds okay
-MPG are mid 20's, I think some of it is the gearbox not disengaging at stop
-No floor mats
-Gonna need ongoing TLC
-Undocumented timing belt, looks good but should be changed
Now that you have already decided against adoption, the good:
-Its a GTI, and even with a funky auto its a blast to drive and makes you look cool
-Great heated leather with minimal damage
-No CEL, I checked, several times
-Great wheels and tires, 75% tread, minimal crubbage
-Straight body
-No mods to be found other than stereo and stubby antenna
-Working FOB with fresh battery
-Cup holders
-Just replaced CTS and fuel filter to help MPGs
-This car has been loved, its in great condition considering mileage
-Runs and drives great, I've driven it from Bozeman to Missoula and Greatfalls without any issues. Nimble, way more fun than the MK4 GLI.
-ESP, not that crap ASR, but real stability control. A wonderful system if you've ever had it save your ass (mine more than once). I'd rather drive an ESP car on ice than any 4 wheel drive I've ever driven.
-1.8t Nevar looses
Down to nitty gritty. I would like $2000 for the car. I can consider partial trade for camper bus parts, mainly an interior, maybe tranny stuff, brake parts or something else ya got. Also would look at 4x100 wheels or a honda cx500. I don't plan on craigslisting this for a while because I want to keep this in the family and see it get loved.
