I get this scratching sound if I lift off the gas in gear, or under braking.
I can coast with the clutch depressed, and there won't be any sound. But when I press the brakes it starts making the sound.
I would say it was a brake pad issue if pressing the clutch didn't affect the noise.. Might be a wheel bearing?
Or my differential self machining?
Does it make the same noise in gear and out of gear (N) with the clutch depressed? The reason I ask is because the Jetta will whine in 1st going slow until I pull it in N - then no whine (sorry no scratching sound). No other gear does that, but my tranny sucks anyway.
I suppose it didn't make the noise with your slushbox...so I would say it may be drivetrain related. Maybe your throwout bearing...? That's usually a rough low sound - can you describe the sound a little more?
I can pop it out of gear into neutral and there will be no noise. It will do it at any speed too.
It's not the throw out bearing.
Its like... a scraping sound. Really sounds like its coming from the brakes. What is so confusing is that it only does it when there is deceleration, with or w/o using the brakes.
nor if it's just on side of the spiders, or just one diff carrier bearing. most of the time it;s the small pinion bearing falling to pieces. I should start taking pictures of some of the trannies we do....amzing how much abuses 020's will take.

mines an 02A.
But I let my mechanic drive it today and he said it was a brake noise.
EDIT: BTW how much will it cost you to rebuild my transmission? *poke poke*
250 to pull it apart and put it back together. any parts or machine work, or extra labor adds to the price. Worst I've charged ever was 1900, but that thing was fukt. I basically had a case, shifter, and shafts.
