85 Golf 5 Speed Trans question...

Post by James »

So how hard is it to swap out a 5 speed transmission on an 85 Golf? Do you have any suggestions as to where to buy a used or rebuilt trans?

Thanks for all your help!

I would say its no harder than any other front drive car. I did it twice with the 88 gti I had. I found its much easier if you drop the sub frame too.
I had my trans rebuilt by BSI in florida, they prepare VWs for IT racing, although recently they are doing more Miata stuff. Anyway that trans was one of the best shifting trans I have ever driven.

The swap would take maybe 2 hours with a lot of beer time?
Lol.
