Part Questions

Post by bigmontana »

So hopefully I'll be picking my 63 Beetle this spring from home.

It is in really good shape since it has been garaged sine I last drove it in high school in 97. It needs a new motor, converted to 12 volt system, and new interior. My question is where are good air cooled part places I can contact, for things like motors and interior. Also minus the motor I want to restore it to like it was in 64 when my dad bought it. I also want to drive it relativly at highway sppeds of like 70 or so. What size motor would be best for me to get for it. I'm thinking 1600-1800. what do you guys think?

Yeah it has sort of ben a storage shed but at least it has always been inside since it has been parked. Can't say that for the years it was driven, then it sat outside and got some pretty bad sun rot.

Can't wait to get it. Hey Mike did you remember seeing it parked at Senior? I usually parked it in the lot.

Don't remember it, but I never had a car. You had that in the garage the whole time? :sly:

Well it sat out side when I drove it but it has been garaged ever since I left high school, no body else has drivin it since. It is in need of some TLC, hopefully it will be on the road by this summer. I won't have done anything major to it on account of money right now. I just plan on getting a tune up and hopefully next year when I'm living out there I get some one to help me work on it and redo it. you guys should come and check it out when I come to get it this spring. It is pretty much all original except for the aftermarket tape deck and the wood steering wheel my dad put in. I am putting the factory AM radio in it for looks and I'll mount a CD player in it somewhere for sound.
I can't wait. It has been over 12 years since I have driven it.

Go with a 1776, dual Kadrons (cheap and easy to tune), with an Engle 110 cam. Keep the stock size valves so you can use your heater boxes, but upgrade the valve springs and rocker shafts. Ditch the stock "oil filter" screen and get a full flow set with a real filter. This setup makes good power, is cheap to do, and reliable to boot.

Magazine Sources

I have a couple of boxes of Hot VWs and VW Trends that have tons of tech articles and advertisers that would give you lots of info on setting up the 1776. There are several great sources. I also have a book on using the Weber Carbs. You can have any of it if you can come get it. I am in Bozeman.

Can I keep them or borrow them, the reason i'm asking is that I don't get to Bozeman very often, so I could not return them, but f I could have some of them then the next time in Bozeman I'd take you up on taking them. I'm going to try to get there this summer for the big GTG so I'll see if I can get some then.
Thanks.

You can take both boxes. I had intended on selling some of the back issues on ebay, but I just don't have time to worry about them. I actually already posted them in the classified section for free. You can have all you want if they are still here when you come. I just don't want to move around them a long time.
Thanks.
