Horn Swap

Post by bigmontana »

My horn in my GLI does not work. But the one in my other Jetta does, I'm thinking of putting the good horn into my GLI, has anyone done this and can you give me ideas. I'm going to try to do this it seems pretty painless.

If they are both Mk2s, it should be pretty straightforward, they may evn have the same plugs. Check your fuses in the first car first, it may be that simple.

Thanks,
Yeah they are both MKIIS, and I don't think it is a fuse I have some wierd metal pieces in my ashtray that the guy I bought the car from said they were from the horn. At first I did not think I had a horn on my GLI, but after closer examination I noticed one. I'll check fuses. When I pull the horn guts from my parts Jetta, they should just mount into my GLI wheel shouldn't they? And if I actually pull the horn from the one to the other, where's the best place to run the wire through the bay, and where does it go into in the steering wheel? As soon as more of the snow melts off my Jetta, I'll take the horn out and examine how to put it into my GLI.

I thought I'd start with something simple.

In those MKII's sometimes the horn (the two metal parts in your glove compartment) would stick, so that's probably why the PO pulled the plates from the horn pad. They just need to be fiddled with and then they wont touch, which is why the horn blares. If you pull the horn pad off (it just pulls straight out) you should see some springs on the underside, and you should see the horn wire (brown?). If you touch the wire to anywhere that's grounded you should hear the horn.

Thank you so much that saves me a lot of work from running wires. I do have those plates in my ashtray, I'll mess with those and try to put them together. Thanks I'm tired of not having a horn.
