Snapped Studs removing VR6 Downpipe ???

Post by BigSkyVR6Caddy »

I snapped 2 of the 6 studs removing the downpipe from the exhaust manifold on my VR6.

Anybody got any tips on how too do this a better way? :banghead:

How do I go about removing the broken studs & installing new ones?

VR6 guys... I plan on running a techtonics downpipe and exhuast.
Should I just think about an after market exhaust manifold?

use a air inpackt to tack of the bolts if they snap weld a nut on to the end of them and try again as for after market manifolds you dont need them the stock ones are better any ways with the difrence in were the cilenders are lokated in the engine. good luck

The downpipe is removed.
I got some penetrating oil on the broken studs where they go into the manifold and I will let them soak a while.
Shouldn't I just be able to tap them out of the manifold from the back side?
They are not threaded into the manifold are they?

i am pritty shur they are threded in you will have to spin them out some how and if you weld a nut on them the heat will let them come out easy or just use vice grips or left handed drill bitts and eazy outs

let the penetrant soak in then use a propane torch to heat up the metal around the studs vice grips work but i used a little device meant to get out broken studs if you have trouble still ill borrow it from work, its the cats ass.

x2

The 75 Ford had some stuck bolts too - I ended up having them helicoiled at the machine shop.

Good choice I love the TT downpipes with the TT exhaust. It sounds so good.(There are links to a videos of my car floating around here. If you want a sound demo :) I can't see many gains from an aftermarket manifold, and I'm not sure I've seen too many. Are you running cams?
